LNA, LA AND OLEIC ACID - FOR HEALTH & WELL BEING
Flaxseed Oil contains around 50 to 60% of the Omega 3 essential fatty acid (EFA), Alpha Linolenic Acid (LNA), and 12 to 15% of Linoleic Acid (LA), an Omega 6 fatty acid (EFA) which can be converted to Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). Flaxseed Oil is also a rich source of Oleic Acid, an Omega 9 monounsaturated fatty acid found in olive oil.
LNA, LA and Oleic acids are increasingly used as supplements for their health benefits. The two Omega 3 fatty Acids, Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), produced in the body from the Alpha Linolenic Acid (LNA) found in Flaxseed Oil, are also important for good health.
Essential fatty acids (EFA) used for manufacturing prostaglandins cannot be manufactured in the body and need to be provided from the diet.
PROSTAGLANDINS - THE HEALTH CONTROLLERS
The Omega 3 fatty Acids LNA, DHA and EPA are converted to Prostaglandins E3 (PGE3) in the body. PGE3 is a hormone - like compound which controls many of the body’s essential functions. These include the inflammatory, healing and repair processes, the immune system, the neural circuits in the brain, cardiovascular, digestive and reproductive systems, the body thermostat and calorie loss mechanisms.1
FOR SKIN, HAIR AND NAILS
Essential fatty acids are needed for healthy skin and hair. Deficiency in EFA’s may result in skin flaking, dandruff, brittle nails and thinning hair. Supplementing the diet with Flaxseed Oil can have beneficial effects on the skin, and many common and difficult to treat skin complaints respond favourably when flaxseed oil is included in the diet.
Flaxseed Oil is widely used as a nutritional supplement in arthritis, to help manage joint tenderness and improve mobility. This appears to be dthe result of the conversion of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids EPA and DHA to the series 3 prostaglandins (PGE3). PGE3 controls the inflammatory process by blocking the production of the inflammatory Series 2 prostaglandins (PGE2) and leukotrienes.
A diet high in Arachidonic acid, which is found in many animal fats, can result in the production of high levels of inflammatory PGE2, which can damage tissues and cells resulting in painful joints and skin conditions.
Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in Flaxseed Oil help control cholesterol levels by helping HDL cholesterol (the beneficial cholesterol) to remove LDL Cholesterol from the arteries and return it to the liver for removal. HDL cholesterol travels smoothly through the blood stream and is converted into bile salts, the mechanism by which the body controls cholesterol levels. 1
